Since the birth of our nation, our military has risked countless lives to protect our rights and freedoms. While the men and women of our military have endured these difficulties for us, we have often forgotten about our servicemen at the end of their duties and have left them to be on their own. With the inception of post-traumatic stress disorder, the public became aware of one of the great concerns that our military faces once they have returned home, but unfortunately, nothing has really been done to help prevent this - until now.

Iran's rejection of the nuclear deal offered by the United States, Russia, and EU, in which most of its enriched nuclear material would be shipped abroad for rendering into fuel for medical purposes, has forced the US to once again bring the specter of sanctions to the table.

On Thursday, November 19, please join CSIS and partners in commemorating World Toilet Day. While many people who have access to a toilet might consider this a humorous concept, the global sanitation crisis necessitates that a spotlight be shined on both the severity of the problem and the promising solutions. Join us on the lawn of the United States Capitol to learn about, and give voice to, the 2.5 billion people who lack access to a toilet and the 1.8 million people who die annually as a result.

Transparency International just released its annual ranking of corruption around the world, and once again, Somalia is ranked as most corrupt. But the fact that Somalia has a non-functioning government makes me wonder how it could even be on the list to begin with.

A Power Plant in Space?

The story of Icarus teaches us that it is dangerous to fly close to the sun.  But that is only when you are wearing wings made of wax.  When you are harnessing the sun’s energy with photovoltaic cells, closer is actually better.  In fact, solar energy is five times stronger in space than it is on the Earth's surface.  Taking this to heart, Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency announced this week that it plans to build an energy station in space that will capture s

Many of us grew up watching cartoons and movies about the future that showed us a number of objects, such as flying cars, that would be fun to have but others also brought to us the idea of prosthetic limbs and other resources that helped repair or replace integral elements of our daily lives. While some of these have slowly come across and have been used to help individuals who may have lost limbs in a war or due to certain diseases, these alternatives never truly became mainstream. The Swiss company IMI is now looking to change that.

christrj's picture

During the Cold War, U.S. nuclear weapons served the invaluable purpose of deterring the conventionally superior Soviet Union. Under the theory of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), the overwhelming destruction that would be caused by nuclear use and the ensuing retaliation prevented either side from using nuclear weapons. Today, however, the times are a changin.

Scientists are one step closer to developing an elevator capable of conveying people and objects to and from space.  Once the domain of fringe astrophysicists and science fiction novelists, the Space Elevator, as it is called, has garnered enough credibility to become a mainstream science project.  According to one observer, “The space elevator is where the PC was i
