The spectrum of health challenges is truly amazing. The interdependence of our increasingly cosmopolitan society is making it more likely that we will one day face a global “super bug” pandemic. In some parts of the world, people are still dying from diarrhea and cholera. How can the U.S. and the international community ensure basic human health worldwide and at the same time prepare for cataclysmic events?

Many of us grew up watching cartoons and movies about the future that showed us a number of objects, such as flying cars, that would be fun to have but others also brought to us the idea of prosthetic limbs and other resources that helped repair or replace integral elements of our daily lives. While some of these have slowly come across and have been used to help individuals who may have lost limbs in a war or due to certain diseases, these alternatives never truly became mainstream. The Swiss company IMI is now looking to change that.

Less than 48 hours after Obama announced his national security team, homeland security threats are already pouring in. CNN is reporting that the United States will face a biological terrorist attack by 2013. This cataclysmic event "would be 9/11 times 10 or [even] a hundred," according to former Florida Senator Bob Graham.
